DeJuan Collins returns to Zalgiris
Zalgiris Kaunas and former Euroleague assists king DeJuan Collins are together again after the club announced a one-year deal on Thursday night. Collins (188, 33) led the Euroleague in assists with 5.3 per game during the 2007-08 season.
He spent a season-and-a-half with Zalgiris, arriving in January 2007 and helping the team win back-to-back Lithuanian League and Cup doubles.
Collins was also the Baltic League Final Four MVP in 2008 after leading Zalgiris to that title.
All told Collins has played parts of four Euroleague seasons with two teams – Zalgiris and Alba Berlin. In the past two seasons, Collins has played for Lokomotiv Rostov in Russia, Cajasol in Spain and Kavala in Greece. Last season he averaged 12.1 points, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals in the Greek League.
He previously played for Brose Baskets, Tubingen and Berlin in Germany, Varese in Italy and Aris Thessaloniki in Greece. Collins won the German League and German Cup titles with Alba in 2003 and also helped Aris to make it to the Greek Cup final in 2005.

Sasu Salin in Olimpija for 3 seasons
Nineteen years old Finnish National Team player Sasu Salin (192cm, 1991) signed three years contract with Union Olimpija Ljubljana today.
He comes from Finnish team Honka Espoo Playboys. Salin, who is said to be one of the most talented players of his generation in Europe, is at the moment with his national team playing FIBA Qualifications for Eurobasket 2011, and averaging 13 points per game, while shooting 63.6% from the arch.
Before playing for senior national team, he played for U20 Finnish National Team this summer, where he averaged 16.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Salin will be the second Finn in Union Olimpija's history. Before him, his team mate from national team, Teemu Rannikko left great impression on Ljubljana's crowd during 2005-2007 period.
Jure Zdovc, head coach of Union Olimpija: "Salin is extremely young player, but considering what he has shown in senior national team, we believe he is ready to play basketball at the highest level. We signed a three years contract with Sasu, so we want him to stay here, and help us, for longer period of time. He is playing on both guard positions, and is extremely good distance shooter, also he has a good feel for offensive rebounds. We are expecting him in Ljubljana, as soon as he finishes with national team duties."

Aris announced P.J. Tucker for 2 seasons and Fanis Koumbouras
Aris hit the jackpot with Tucker.
Aris BC announced that the team agreed terms with scorer P.J. Tucker(1.96-SG/SF) for the next 2 seasons. The deal was announced via the official website of Aris and the player will be sending his signed contract within the next few hours.
Tucker's real name is actually Anthony and the P.J stands for Pop Junior. It's a nickname that his father gave to him soon after his birth and he has been carrying it ever since. He graduated from the University of Texas back in 2006, where he won numerous awards. He was selected by the Toronto Raptors with the 35th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft and signed a two-year deal with them on July 26, 2006. He spent some time in the NBDL with the Colorado 14ers and was waived by the Raptors finally in 2007.
During 2007-2008 he spent his pro season overseas where he conquered the Israeli league as a player of Hapoel Holon and he was also named the MVP of the league. After that he signed with BC Donetsk but had a serious injury that sidelined him for 2 months. Nevertheless he was one the top scorers of the Ukrainian league averaging 19.4 points per game. Last season BC Donetsk had serious financial issues so he returned to Israel and Bnei Hasharon averaging 17.3 points 9 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 12 games.
Aris will also be trying Fanis Koumbouras(1.88-PG) at the request of head coach Sharon Drucker and chances are he will sign a contract with them. There is an obvious gap in the backcourt and Koumbouras might be the only true point-guard in the team. Aris might also keep Michalis Tsairelis(2.07-PF/C) after all as the youngster has been impressing the coaching staff during the practice sessions. That means there is a possibility that a bosman center will not be signed.

Paok announced Rawle Marshall
The bad boy lands in Greece next season.
Paok announced Rawle Marshall(2.01-SF) via their official website. The American small forward will be their player for next season and chances are he will be their starting small forward. Marshall made his name in the Euroleague playing for Cibona after a great season in the Eurocup with Hemofarm. Marshall will play in Greece for the first time and last season he started in Valencia but coach Spahija showed him the door and Marshall found a home in Villeurbanne. There he averaged 9.5 points 2.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 21 games in the ProA.

Panellinios going bust!
The flow of money is over for Panellinios.
Last season's Eurocup Final Four appearance might just be the swan song for Panellinios in the big leagues. According to superbasket.gr, the major shareholder of Panellinios, tycoon Minos Kyriakou, has decided that it's time for a quick exit. The economic recession has affected the team of Panellinios as well and if he chooses to leave the team then they're luxurious budget(for Greek League standards) will be over.
This means that they could potentially lose all the players that currently have contracts for next season. Another website from Greece, basketblog.gr, suggests that if Kyriakou withdraws from the team and it no longer operates as a Ltd company then the team could be relegated 2 leagues down. This is not really news in Greece but it has been coming for some time now. It's just that things might be made clear this week.

Aris turning now to Ndudi Ebi and waiting on Haralambidis
As the Hoop revealed 11 days ago in Twitter, Aris was interested in one of the best players of the LegaDue and that was Nigerian/British forward/center Ndudi Ebi(2.06-PF/C) that played for Rimini last season. Coach Drucker had Ebi in his sights for some time now and as of recently the interest became even more serious. Ebi can cover both positions in the front-line and he can also shoot the ball if needed. All this combined with his bosman passport make him an ideal candidate for Aris. Ebi also has NBA experience as he was drafted back in 2003 by Minnesota but he didn't get much playing time in the NBA. He has also played for Bnei Hasharon and Carife Ferrara in the past. Ferrara recently expressed interest in the player as well so Aris are not alone trying to sign the player.
Latest information suggest from his agent's side suggest that the interest from Aris is even more intense now that potentially means that the player and the team are in advanced talks. He shares the same agent with Matt Walsh that played in Aris last season. Ebi averaged 15.3 points 13.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals and 1.7 blocks in 33 games in the LegaDue making him the top rebounder of the league by far. In Aris now they're waiting for the imminent collapse of Panellinios to sign Kostas Haralambidis. More on that later.

Scandal with Fasengas in Greece
What people do for money..
According to tovima.gr, Alpha Diallo Fasengas' Greek nationality could possibly be revoked and the player will no longer be able to play for Panathinaikos as a Greek player.
Panathinaikos was in a rush to sign the "next big thing" of Greek(or so they said) basketball. Alpha Diallo Fasengas(2.08-C) has an impressive physique for a player of 16 years of age. His huge wingspan and ability to learn basketball in less than a year created a massive media coverage for the youngster that also led to the uncovering of the scandal.
Fasengas' parents are both from Guinea. His real father's whereabouts are unknown and he is considered possibly dead as he was the bodyguard of Guinea's dictator that was overthroned in 2008. Since then he was known to be locked up but there have been no signs of life since then according to the article.
It also mentions that a Greek man was allegedly paid the sum of 1,500 euros to pose as the biological father of the youngster and was also promised a 1% commission if the player was sold to a team. There was an official administrative investigation into the matter by the Ministry of Decentralization and eGovernment in Greece to find out exactly what happened and verify the validity of the Fasengas' Greek citizenship.
If this proves out that his documents are actually fake it will be a massive debacle for all those involved. The Greek Basketball Federation that got the player to participate in the U-18 Eurobasket competition and Panathinaikos that rushed to sign the player without double checking if every detail is correct.

Kavala BC announced Kelvin Lewis
A sharpshooter for Kavala BC.
Some players are unlucky enough to be in the shadow of the star players who seem to steal all the airtime. This is the case of shooting guard Kelvin Lewis(1.93-SG) who was the wingman of NCAA's leading scorer Aubrey Coleman. Kelvin Lewis was announced by the official website of Kavala Bc and he will be their starting shooting guard for next season.
He graduated this summer from the University of Houston where he averaged 15.5 points 4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 35 games. He also played one game for the Houston Rockets in the Las Vegas Summer League. A great signing for Kavala that bagged themselves a capable scorer.

Mikhail Torrance battles for life
Let's hope he has a speedy recovery.
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Less than 10 minutes after he came to the sideline with a smile to greet a writer he had met only once before, former Alabama basketball star Mikhail Torrance collapsed on the basketball court Friday afternoon, touching off a dramatic, emotional and urgent rescue attempt to save his life.
Before leaving to join Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Israeli powerhouse with whom he signed earlier this summer, Torrance wanted to work out at the acclaimed IMG Academy, where he also worked out before the 2010 NBA draft. Friday was his third day there, and he looked and sounded excited before the workout began. There was hop in his step.
Then everything turned tragic. Torrance had just finished his first shooting drill and was heading toward the sideline for a drink when his knees buckled and he crashed to the floor, hitting his head. Hard.
Within seconds, one trainer was by his side, then another and another in a busy training facility that was quickly cleared. He moved a few times as they tried to keep him conscious, but that didn't last long. Paramedics arrived within a few minutes and started pumping his chest, trying to revive him. Torrance had stopped breathing. They also tried using the defibrillator to shock his heart. He was not breathing when he was taken from the gym.
He was rolled onto a stretcher while CPR continued to be administered, then whisked to nearby Blake Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, where he was treated for an hour before being transferred to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
"He is still alive and he is in our intensive care center at the hospital," a hospital spokesperson said Friday night. The spokesperson could not say if Torrance had suffered a heart attack or what caused the collapse.
A source close to Torrance confirmed that he was breathing with the aid of ventilator and that his family was rushing in from Birmingham, Ala.
"I was shocked and saddened to hear about Mikhail this afternoon," Anthony Grant, Torrance's college coach at Alabama, said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this very difficult time. I want Mikhail and his family to know that his teammates, coaches and the entire university community are praying for his full recovery."
A spokesperson from the IMG Basketball Academy, where he had just begun a workout in its air-conditioned gymnasium, could only confirm that he had been taken to the hospital.
"Maybe we'll know more in the morning,'' said a person at the hospital familiar with the situation but not authorized to release information.
This much was certain:
Torrance just completed four years at the University of Alabama, where he established himself as one of the better point guards in college basketball. He averaged 32 minutes and 15 points per game as a senior, consistently showing NBA skills.
Yet his heart issue was well known, although not considered dangerous. Some people had referred to it as "an enlarged heart.'' Torrance himself had said several times that he had "an athlete's heart,'' which he described as "just a little bit bigger'' than most. Earlier this summer, Torrance told The Birmingham News and Mobile Press-Register that team doctors at Alabama cleared him to play and said his heart condition was common to athletes.
He blamed the heart issue for not being drafted, especially after he was examined by doctors at the NBA's pre-draft camp, which didn't prohibit him from playing, but it raised red flags with individual teams that might have been interested.
"After seeing the reports, we took him off our draft board, and we didn't think it was in his best interest to play basketball,'' one NBA executive said Friday evening after learning what happened. "He had the talent to play, but we didn't think he was physically qualified (because of the report on his heart)."
Torrance spent four days in the Miami Heat's summer camp, but they never signed him to a contract, and released him before they opened play in the Las Vegas Summer League.
It was soon after he left Miami that he signed a contract to play professionally in Israel for highly regarded Maccabi Tel Aviv. He was expected to leave soon to join his new team.

VEF Riga announced Artsiom Parakhouski
Riga snatched Parakhouski for next season.
In a surprising turn of events, what seemed like a done deal, buckled under the pressure from both sides. Aris was in the lead to sign Artsiom Parakhouski(2.11-C) but there was one condition that neither the player or the team would agree on. Aris wanted a 2-season contract with a buy-out clause but Parakhouski wanted just a one season contract so that he would become a free agent in the summer.
It seems that Riga didn't have that problem and swiftly snatched the player from Aris. Vice president Vandis Valters said during the official announcement that Parakhouski was quite popular and many teams were interested to sign him, so he is quite pleased with how things turned out. In Aris they're back on the drawing board looking for a new center with a few candidates in mind.

Koumbouras could take Maroussi to court
Fanis Koumbouras has one more season in his contract.
According to new guys on the block, basketopinions.blogspot.com, Fanis Koumbouras(1.87-PG) might take Maroussi to court to claim the money that is owed to him. In Maroussi they're trying to settle debts in settlements that resemble mortgage deals. In this case they're trying to settle a debt to Koumbouras from last season of 24,000 euros in 32 instalments!
Koumbouras might as well take Maroussi to court as they told him that he is not part of next season's team although he has a 135,000 euros contract with them.

Aris to sign Artsiom Parakhouski, Videnov heading to the ACB
He is the new favourite of the Belarusian crowds.
Now that Greek media decided to reveal his name, I guess I can reveal it too. Artsiom Parakhouski(2.11-C) is the best prospect to come out of Belarus in a long time. I did say he has the physique of Aleks Maric as they are of the same height and also the same wingspan(7'1'' or 2.16m) but Parakhouski is actually more athletic than Maric. He is a player that draftexpress.com ranks as number 11 in this season's top centers. Not bad for Belarus.
Parakhouski wanted to big the first player from Belarus to play in the NBA but he didn't manage to secure a contract this summer although he put up a decent effort to impress the NBA scouts during the Boston Summer Camp and the Las Vegas Summer League where he played for Boston averaging 5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 4 games. Coach Sharon Drucker managed to see him in action in Las Vegas and set the wheels in motion to acquire the player for Aris.
He graduated at the end of this season from Radford averaging the impressive figures of 21.4 points 13.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game in a total of 31 games in the Big South Conference. He was born in Minsk and he only started playing basketball at the age of 16. Needless to say that he has come a long way since then and perhaps in a few years time he will indeed become the first Belarusian in the NBA.
Alexander Koul(2.15-C) and Yahor Meschcharakou(2.07-PF) have also played for Aris in the past so he will be the 3rd Belarusia in Aris if all goes well. He still has one game to go with his country's National Team against Romania this Saturday and after that he will be free to join the rest of the team of Aris. In his last game he was sidelined after 1 minute of play by light ankle injury. Information coming from the player's side suggests that his injury is already gone, that the deal between him and Aris is very close and Parakhouski is glad to start his European adventure(his own words) in Aris and Greece. Minsk 2006 also approached him, but coach Andrei Krivonos knew that they couldn't attain him.
If all goes well the deal could be announced very soon. On another issue Filip Videnov will probably prefer the money of the ACB as Aris didn't managed to match his demands (well over 180,000 euros) and he will probably go for one of his 2 offers from Spain. That means Aris will sign an American small forward that could also be announced very soon.

Fernandez wants to return to Europe.. again..
Fans of the Portland Trail Blazers have always had an irrational love for Rudy Fernandez. The athletic shooting guard has started a total of six games for the franchise over the last two seasons, yet the fan base will spontaneously unite and cry out in unison if any jabs whatsoever are thrown in the Spaniard's direction.
A great example of this irresponsible passion occurred in the my early days of Twitter, when Rudy was caught from behind on a fast break attempt by then-Laker Trevor Ariza back in March of 2009. It was a flagrant foul to be sure, but Blazer fans wanted blood, and I tried to be the voice of reason in defense of Ariza and the Lakers. You can guess how that went down, and in fact, I think I'm still blocked from following @blazersedge on Twitter to this day because of the events of that night.
In any case, this is somewhat worthwhile in bringing up today, as Fernandez (via his agent Andy Miller) seems to be done with the Blazers and the NBA, and is ready to return to Europe, for a variety of reasons.
Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype.com interviewed Miller, and along with some other tidbits, published this quote which pretty much sums up the situation between Fernandez and the Blazers.
"The impression I'm getting more and more is that he's lost interest in playing in the NBA, quite frankly," Miller said. "It's my impression that Rudy would prefer to be in Europe rather than the NBA at this point."
Ouch. So, whether it's playing time, role on the team, or something else entirely, it appears as though Fernandez will not be back in Portland next season. I'm sure that's distressing on some level to Blazers' fans, but fear not: you still have the return of Greg Oden to look forward to, which should be more than adequate in terms of a reason to be completely underwhelmed and disappointed in your favorite team next season.

A center and Videnov for Aris?
Aris are looking all over the place for new talent.
In Aris they have some targets in mind and very soon they will be sealing the deal with a hot new prospect from the north. I mentioned this earlier today in my Twitter account. Some countries are not known for their basketball talent production.. he comes from one of these countries and it's not Russia. You might think some teams would have not missed a player with the physique of Aleks Maric.
The new player that will be announced soon will close the gap in the front-line and quite possibly he will be the starting center. A fellow countryman of his has played for Aris in the past and he can vouch for how it is to play in Greece and the A1. The deal is very close to be finalised so I can't publish any more information at this time but this player hasn't played in Greece before and he is NBA material with the prospect of playing there in the future.
Also in Aris they will try to sign Filip Videnov again although there is a significant gap between what the player is asking and what Aris are willing to pay. This will allow Aris to quite possibly sign a foreign guard or if negotiations fail Aris will be signing a non-European small forward.
Videnov is currently playing with the Bulgarian National Team and he is the best player of his team so his asking price might difficult to bring down.

Roma signed Heytvelt and released Hutson
Lottomatica Roma overhauled its frontcourt on Monday, agreeing to re-sign center Josh Heytvelt and releasing power forward Andre Hutson.
Heytvelt (210, 24) joined Roma at the end of last season to help the team in the Italian League playoffs. He took part in two playoff games for Roma before the season ended, but impressed enough for the team to re-sign him for this season. Heytvelt began the year in Turkey with Oyak Renault, where he ranked seventh in the Turkish League in scoring with 17.3 points per game and was the league’s runner-up in rebounding with 10 per game. Oyak Renault was his first professional club after a standout college basketball career at Gonzaga University. Heytvelt was named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team after his senior season in 2008-09 when he ranked top 10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounding.
Hutson (202, 31) leaves Roma after two season with the team. He averaged 10.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 10 Euroleague games and 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in the Italian League last season.

“VEF Riga is a well-established team that is expected to do well each season,” Cain said. “It’s going to be a new experience playing with a new team, but hopefully I can find a way to help the team and adapt to how they play. I want to be a successful player and help them win.”
Cain notched one of the best all-around seasons in USD history as a senior in 2009-10. He earned Great West Conference Player of the Year, GWC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-GWC honors while leading the Coyotes to a 22-10 overall record and 11-1 in the conference. Maroussi to sign Sarikopoulos and Karapostolou
Although everything is up in the air, in Maroussi they are still planning ahead.
Maroussi are going to sign Zisis Sarikopoulos(2.13-C) and Sotiris Karapostolou(1.95-SG/SF). The Greek team is in the middle of changing administration and management and although the deal is still not secure they are still signing players.
Their next move is to book youngster Zisis Sarikopoulos(2.13-C) who is a long standing member of the Greek Youth National Teams. Sarikopoulos got the Silver Medal in the last U-21 Eurobasket with Greece but he didn't get any playing time in Ohio State where he only played one season. The other target for Maroussi is Sotiris Karapostolou who played for Iraklis last season and helped them earn a promotion back to the A1 league. He is known as a good 3-point shooter and this quality is appreciated now even more with the new rules.

Aris could sign Matalon, looking for a center
Marios Matalon might return to Aris.
According to basketblog.gr, Aris might sign again Marios Matalon(1.85-PG) who had a good season in the second division of Israel. Matalon has dual Israeli and Greek citizenship and last season he played for Hapoel Megido in Israel. A wise choice for Matalon as he got a lot of playing time and he was actually one of the best players of the team. He averaged 15.2 points 3.5 rebounds and 4 assists in 26 games. Matalon was invited by head coach Sharon Drucker to join the rest of the team of Aris and train with them and coach Drucker seems to be pleased with Matalon and there is a good possiblity that Aris will sign him again. Marios Matalon used to be part of the junior team of Aris and played briefly in Greece for Kolossos Rhodes and Trikala BC. He helped Hapoel Megido a promotion to the first division in Israel.
On another issue in Aris they are looking for another big man to complement the front line. The candidates seem to be from the European market. One of the was playing in the LegaDue last season and there is also interest in another big man who hasn't played in Europe before. Both of these players are also targetted by Italian teams. In Aris they are willing to wait to secure the best possible player for their front-line. At the same time Michalis Tsairelis(2.07-PF/C) will not continue in Aris any more. Kavala and Panionios are interested in signing him, so the decision about his future will be decided in the next few days.

Rumors about Roderick Blakney
You never know..
According to information of the Hoop, Roderick Blakney is one of the alternative solutions of Aris for the position of the point-guard. Sam Van Rossom(1.88-PG) is the first choice but in Aris they won't be able to compete with a team that can offer Olimpia Milano more money to acquire the player on-loan.
On ther hand not much is happening in Panellinios and the team resemles a ghost town of sorts. So in Aris they're thinking that if Van Rossom is lost(Zaragoza was the last team that was interested) they could turn to veteran Roderick Blakney(1.81-PG) who knows the Greek League after many years of playing there and he also has a Bulgarian passport that allows him to play without occupying a foreigner spot. Despite his 34 years of age Blakney had a great season with Panellinios going all the way to the Final 4 of the Eurocup. He averaged 11.2 points 2.1 rebounds and 3.1 asists in 18 games in the Eurocup.

Maccabi TA signed Big Sofo for 2 seasons
Today, 5 August, center Sofoklis Schortsanitis (25, 2.06), signed a two-year contract with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv.
Immediately after the signing, which took place in Cyprus, the player said, “As soon as I made the decision not to keep playing in Greece, I started looking for a big club, one that was well-run and had a great reputation, where I could make a contribution – I found all that with Maccabi Tel Aviv. I’m very excited to come to Tel Aviv and to Nokia Arena. I know the club, its fans and its impressive accomplishments very well, and I’m going to do everything I can to continue to glorify Maccabi Tel Aviv.”
Maccabi head coach David Blatt said after the signing, “I’m pleased and delighted that we’ve signed Sofo.
As we began building the club, we set certain goals; one of the main goals was to find an inside player, one who will dominate under the basket. We were patient, we waited a long time and in the end we found one of the best centers in all of Europe, someone who is also one of the most special and popular players who can be found today. Our fans have been waiting for a big man, and here he is.”

Big Sofo going abroad
He said he will decide next week..
Sofoklis Schortsanitis(2.06-C) could become the newest addition of Maccabi Tel Aviv according to reports from Israel and Greece. Basketnet.gr spoke to the agent of Schortsanitis, Panagiotis Kapazoglou, who said that Sofo has offers from 3 major teams in Europe and that he will decide about his future in the next few days. He said the offers are not from Greek teams but he didn't want to give any more details. He is currently training with the rest of the squad of the Greek National Team.
He didn't manage to secure a contract in the NBA and he got no interest from Olympiakos or Panathinaikos. Nevertheless, sport5.co.il says that Schortsanitis is in negotiations with Maccabi Tel Aviv so that is one of his potential targets. Rumors have appeared previously in Greece about an interest from Valencia and Malaga. I guess we'll find out in the next few days.
