Aris to announce Kenny Hasbrouck?

It was about time..

According to newspaper Athlitika Nea, the former Siena graduate Kenny Hasbrouck(1.91-PG/SG) will be landing in Greece and the team of Aris that are in desperate need of another scorer. Hasbrouck is still training with the Miami Heat although he was officially waived from the team. In Aris they're waiting for his contracts to arrive and then the player will probably be announced. There was an existing verbal agreement with Hasbrouck who will be replacing the injured Pierre Pierce(1.93-PG/SG)

Hasbrouck was the star of the Siena Saints and he graduated in season 2008-2009 where he averaged 14.6 points 3.5 rebounds 2.8 assists and 2 steals in 35 games. This summer he played for the Miami Heat during the Las Vegas Summer League averaging 13.6 points 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 5 games and he also followed Miami in the pre-season averaging 4.6 points 1.4 rebounds and 3 asists in 5 games having his best performance against CSKA Moscow.

Steve Francis to sign contract with Beijing Ducks

What was pretty much official is now totally official:

Three time NBA All-Star Steve Francis will be in Beijing tonight to officially sign a contract with the CBA’s Beijing Shougang Ducks, according to the Jinghua Times (via Sina Sports).

The deal has been reported earlier as a one year guaranteed deal with a mutual team/player option for a second year.

Because of the time difference, on Monday night, or Monday morning in the States, the two of us well sign a contract,” said Beijing general manager, Yuan Chao.  ”Obviously, this doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone.”

Yuan didn’t give an exact date as to when Francis would officially report to the team.

We still can’t decide on that.  That’s definitely something we’ll handle after he sings.  Francis will bring his wife and child to China.”

Beijing’s season opener is away at last year’s runner-up, Xinjiang, on December 12th.

In case you’re worried about a potential Stephon Marbury situation, Francis is already on the team’s official roster for next season, both for domestic and Asian continental competition. With former New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks center Randolph Morris, and Jordanian import, Zaid Abbas, who played for well for fourth place Shanghai last year, having signed earlier, Francis’ addition to the Ducks should give the team one of the strongest import lineups in the league.

The Marbury Saga in China is over..?

Knowing Stephon Marbury, he’ll have plenty to say on all of this when he gets the chance.

But right now, as China and the rest of the basketball world remains shocked that Shanxi Zhongyu and their star import have split ways after it was understood that a three-year deal had been agreed upon during the summer, Marbury is likely still on his plane home to the States.  His side of the story will have to wait for at least another day.

Shanxi’s general manager on the other hand, Zhang Aijun, lives in China and thus is not on a 12 hour plane.  So as Marbury was saying goodbye to his supporters at the airport, Zhang was explaining to the media why the sudden break up:

Marbury never signed a contract,” said Zhang to Xinhua reporter, Ma Lin. “So there was no breach of contract, nor was there any treachery.”

According to the report, Marbury and Shanxi agreed upon a general contract structure and put in a clause that would allow the two sides to cooperate with each other in marketing and branding the two time All-Star’s “Starbury” shoe line.

However, when Marbury returned to the States, he sent back another contract filled with other clauses, including one stipulating that the team must re-sign Maurice Taylor, who played with Marbury on Shanxi last year, for another year. Adding to that, Marbury also requested that the two be put up in a five-star hotel in Taiyuan, as well as an apartment complete with a private chef and maids, all at the team’s expense.  The two sides met up again in Las Vegas in October while the team was training, but were unable to come to an agreement.

After Shanxi management returned to China, there was hope from the team that something would eventually be worked out, and they put in the business cooperation clause into the official contract as a sign of good faith.  However, when they sent over the new version to Marbury in America, he came out with even more requests: a $30,000 insurance policy for both his wife and child and roundtrip plane tickets for everyone.

Scared that negotiations would break down completely while the two were apart, Shanxi paid for Marbury’s plane ticket and met with him in Taiyuan, along with the team’s main sponsor, Shanxi Fenjiu, and the Shanxi provincial sports bureau.  After talking, the four pronged discussions ended with Shanxi deciding to give up their pursuit of Marbury.

He left Taiyuan yesterday.

Zhang praised Marbury’s 15 game stay with the team as “positive influence for the team, the fans and the league” and stated that he was “always our number one choice” for their foreign import spot.  But, among the increasing list of demands that Marbury was throwing out, the team also had concerns about his offseason training regiment and conditioning coming into the season.

We had no idea from the time when the season ended up until training if he had worked out or not.  Whether he could play at a high level this season, we just didn’t know.”

There isn’t one team that could meet these demands… There were some that we could fulfill, but we think that although foreign players can decide salary, they can’t have special or preferential treatment when it comes to deciding about life, practice, games, etc.  Athletes, including foreign players, should be treated the same.  Marbury’s requests made it hard for us to manage foreign players.  That’s number one.  Number two, last season, Taylor’s play last year was unsatisfactory, there’s no way we could have used him again for this season.”

From the beginning of October into early November, our team was training in Las Vegas for nearly half a month.  In that time, Marbury came to visit the team just once… When we wanted him to play in an exhibition game against a local team, just to play for 35 minutes, he told me that he had been working out individually before and that he couldn’t play. Even as late as November, we had no idea what his conditioning was.”

There has been rampant fan speculation that Zhang’s decision was premeditated, but Zhang was quick to brush those accusations aside, stating that it would be impossible for the team to have already made up  its mind on the matter since they had hired a special consultant to help Marbury through the process of opening three Starbury stores in Taiyuan, as well as offering help and advice over marketing his own brand in China.  Zhang also said that the team had offered Marbury a 50% of the brand’s stock.

“Emotionally speaking, splitting with Marbury was really tough, but as the club has to deal with reality, we have no choice but to operate within team rules.”

On his Sina microblog, Marbury had this to say to his fans as he left China: WHATS UP CHINA!! HOW ARE YOU GUYS. THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT ALWAYS. I’M SO HAPPY TO SAY THAT THE FANS IN CHINA ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD. LOYALTY IS THE ONLY THING WE KNOW. HONOR AND RSPECT WILL LIVE FOREVER WITH THE FANS IN CHINA. I LOVE YOU… JIAYOU>>>>>>> COME ON

Partizan to announce Jerrells and waive Lafayette

He decided to play in Europe for the first time.

According to sportal.rs, Partizan Belgrade will be replacing Oliver Lafayette(1.88-PG) with promising combo-guard Curtis Jerrells(1.85-PG) that was waived from New Orleans after being traded by San Antonio. Jerrells decided to make his first step into Europe after a season at the NBDL playing for the Austin Toros and averaging the impressive numbers of 21.4 points 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 56 games.

The Baylor graduate went undrafted in 2009 but he tried to make it into the NBA regardless. Jerrells tried to make it again to the NBA this summer where he played in the Las Vegas Summer League for the San Antonio Spurs and he also played 5 games averaging 6.4 points 1.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He also played 3 games for New Orleans averaging 2 points and 1.7 assists. He is expected to play this Wednesday against Khimki. In Partizan he will find former teammate in pre-season James Gist(2.06-PF/C) who was signed a few weeks earlier.

Rumors about Stojakovic and Olympiakos

It was about time for the rumors to emerge..

This is the time of the year when one(or both) of the two Greek powerhouses are ailing and a "messiah" of sorts is required to steer them back on track. In this case it's the usual suspect of latter years, Olympiakos. Dusan Ivkovic has returned to the team that he won the triple crown with and it seems that he has a huge gap in the small forward position.

Kostas Papanikolaou(2.03-SF) and Marko Keselj(2.09-SF) have been recruited to the cause but it seems that Papanikolaou has only started his Euroleague career and Keselj is finding it difficult to adjust to a team like Olympiakos where playing time is not abundant. So this rumor comes from gossip column "Svetlana" of basketblog.gr and it says that although a strict economic policy has been outlined by the owners of Olympiakos the possibility of another addition is not unlikely.

The rumor says that Predrag Stojakovic(2.08-SF) is likely to think about moving to Greece and Olympiakos if the compensation fee that he gets from Toronto is adequate. That means that he would be willing to perhaps sign a contract with Olympiakos. He was recently traded to Toronto as a part of a 5 player deal that landed Jerryd Bayless(1.91-PG) and Predrag Stojakovic to Toronto.

Stojakovic is the owner of a Greek passport and his deadly perimeter shot would make him the ideal addition for the Olympiakos of Dusan Ivkovic. Currently though this is only a rumor and above all wishful thinking but should it become true then it would make Olympiakos a whole new different team with serious firepower at their disposal. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Maroussi announced Dailbor Bagaric

They're in desperate need for results.

It seems that the addition of Lance Allred(2.11-C) didn't produce the desired results so in Maroussi they decided to sign another big man and this time its Croatian veteran Dalibor Bagaric(2.17-C) who is called upon to rescue Maroussi. It was announced via the team's official website that Bagaric will be arriving to Greece on Sunday so he will not make it for the game against Panathinaikos.

Bagaric has played in Greece before and it was back in season 2003-2004 when he played for Olympiakos. Before that he played for 3 seasons for the Chicago Bulls that was the highlight of his career. He has also played for Fortitudo, Girona and Cibona in the past and this season he started playing for KK Dubrava Zagreb in Croatia averaging 13.6 points 11.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 5 games. Bagaric is quite a gamble for Maroussi as he is known for his fiery personality that could upset balances in the team.. unless of course there aren't any already. Time will tell..

Aris waiting on Kenny Hasbrouck

They need another scorer more than anything else.

In Aris Thessaloniki luck is not apparent. They lost Dimitris Verginis(1.91-PG/SG) only after a few weeks and he won't back until February or March. Now they lost Pierre Pierce(1.93-PG/SG) too who will back in the span of 5-7 weeks and they can't wait for him. They needed another guard to fill his shoes and since the opportunity has arisen they will try to go for someone different. Jason Hart(1.91-PG) and Sundiata Gaines(1.85-PG) were the last names that were added to a long list of offered players.

So far Curtis Jerrells(1.85-PG/SG) asked for too much money, Sean Singletary(1.83-PG/SG) hasn't replied because there are other offers on the table, (especially one from Eurocup opponents Azovmash Mariupol and they can offer a lot more dollars) and the last offer they made was to Kenny Hasbrouck(1.91-PG/SG), who was recently waived by the Miami Heat. According to Athlitika Nea, a newspaper affiliated to Aris Thessaloniki, the Thanksgiving holiday put the transfer on hold temporarily but it is expected that Aris will announced someone today after the game with Kolossos Rhodes for the Greek A1 league. It could possibly be Hasbrouck who averaged 4.6 points 1.4 rebounds and 3 assists in 5 games with the Miami Heat in preseason.

The Spanish Champion thanked Rancik for his professionalism during the weeks that he spent as their player and they wished him all the best in the rest of his career.

Iraklis want Giorgos Bogris on loan

He could get some actual playing time there.

According to basketnet.gr, Iraklis is in negotiations with Panathinaikos to get Giorgos Bogris(2.09-C) on loan until the end of the season. The team of Iraklis are in deep trouble this season and the danger of relegation looms menacingly over their heads. The new head coach of the team, Darko Russo, said that the team desperately needs a center so they will ask Panathinaikos to provide them with Giorgos Bogris on a loan agreement.

Nick Lewis(2.08-C) will be leaving the team of Iraklis for more than one reasons and so Bogris sounds like the best candidate as he will get some quality playing minutes. He hasn't been used by Panathinaikos at all in the Greek A1 league so he still reserves the right to play on another Greek team on loan.

Smush Parker offered to Aris

He doesn't get along with Sherf apparently.

Smush Parker(1.93-PG) seems to have been offered to Aris according to basketnet.gr and newspaper Athlitika Nea. The former Los Angeles Lakers player started the season in Spartak St. Petersburg but clashed horns with head coach Svi Sherf who in the process, sidelined him and Anton Ponkrashov seems to be the starting PG for the Russian team. Parker wants to leave and they want to get rid of him so everyone wins..

Parker seems to be a candidate to replace the injured Pierre Pierce in Aris but the fans wouldn't very happy with that kind of move as Smush Parker left Aris in bad terms and with a terrible performance cost them a spot in the Euroleague back in 2004. In one game he managed to miss 11 free throws and his general lack of passion for the game left the fans bitter and frustrated. It's probably a red herring and the actual target could be someone else that has been targetted by Aris in the past..

Panellinios in talks with Brian Zoubek

Panellinios will add another big man.

According to basketnet.gr, head coach of Panellinios, Thanassis Skourtopoulos is after American center Brian Zoubek(2.16-C) formerly of Duke. The article says that the team of Panellinios are in advanced talks with the player and his agent about getting him to play for Panellinios in the Greek A1 league.

Zoubek graduated from Duke last season and he would add a physical presence to the front line of Panellinios with his strength and rebounding prowess. Last season he averaged 5.6 points 7.7 rebounds 1 assists and 1 blocks in 40 games with Duke. Zoubek trained with the New Jersey Nets during preseason but they waived him before the start of the season in the NBA.

Kolossos in talks with Jurica Golemac

Time to bring in some experience into the team.

One might say that the team of Kolossos Rhodes is too young for its own good. So Jamine Peterson(2.03-SF/PF) was internally replaced by Steve Panos(2.05-PF/C) and now another player could soon be added to their roster according to sport.gr. This time it might be Slovenian veteran Jurica Golemac(2.09-PF/C). Golemac started the season in KK Zadar but left shortly thereafter due to problems in his relationship with head coach Daniel Jusup.

Golemac has also played in Greece for Panellinios and Panathinaikos so he has experience playing in the Greek league which means that he will not need any adjustment time. He averaged 8.3 points 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 4 games in KK Zadar.

Jasikevicius returns to Lietuvos Rytas

He said he was tired of waiting..

Lietuvos Rytas announced today via their official website the return of Sarunas Jasikevicius(1.93-PG) to the team that he started his pro career in. The Lithuanian veteran signed a contract until the end of this season with Lietuvos Rytas and it's possible that this will be the last season as a pro athlete.

Jasikevicius was practicing with the team of Peristeri in Greece to stay in shape but he says that he is at 80% at the moment so it's likely that he will play tomorrow against Cibona. Lietuvos Rytas was the team to finally get his signature from the many teams that tried to do that since now. So this will be Jasikevicius' return to first club after an absence of 11 years! Jasikevicius left Rytas in 1999 to play for Olimpija Lubljana and then Barcelona, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Indiana Pacers, Golden State Warriors and he returned to Europe for Panathinaikos.

Elishay Kadir on Loan to Maccabi Haifa

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv forward Elishay Kadir has been loaned to Maccabi Haifa for the remainder of the season.

Blatt: “Vujcic was also loaned out to another team, and he ended up being one of the best players in the
history of the team.”

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and its player Elishay Kadir have reached a mutually beneficial agreement whereby the player will be loaned to Maccabi Haifa for the remainder of the season.

Maccabi’s head coach, David Blatt, discussed the deal with Radio Tel Aviv: “Even Vujcic, in his first season with Maccabi, was in a tough competition with an excess of centers like Huffman and Bashok, so he was loaned out to Villerban. He had an excellent season there, came back and ended up being one of the best players in the history of the team. The same thing could happen with Kadir or any other Maccabi player.”

Aris in talks with MTA to get Yaniv Green on loan

They desperately need a center after they almost lost last weekend.

Aris is in negotiations with Maccabi Tel Aviv according to sources from salonikabasket.blogspot.com. Aris and Maccabi Tel Aviv share many ties. Sharon Drucker used to be the assistant coach in Maccabi, he and David Blatt have the same agent and also the president of Aris, Giannis Damanidis and David Blatt are friends among other things. So It wasn't really a surprise when the first rumors surfaced that Aris are trying to get Yaniv Green(2.06-C) on loan again. They tried earlier this month but the deal didn't go through because Maccabi wouldn't cover enough of the contract for Aris to be able to afford the player.

At the moment the 2 teams are in negotiations again and that means that there will be an addition in the front-line and not a substitution. However that doesn't mean that there won't be another change in the future. In Aris there are still 2 more bosman positions available.  Yaniv Green is not in the immediate plans of David Blatt and that is apparent because of his minimial playing time. However Green wants to get his entire contract of 450,000 dollars so it will all depend on how much Aris will be able to cover and how much will Maccabi endure as a cost. More on this would unfold in the next few days and definitely after tonight's game against Azovmash.

Kostas Papanikolaou to participate in the 2011 Draft

It all depends on this season.

Kostas Papanikolaou(2.03-SF/PF) will probably be declare his participation in the 2011 NBA Draft according to sentragoal.gr. The Greek site says that Papanikolaou has already made up his mind about taking part in the Draft process and this season he is feeling readier than ever.

There have already been representatives from 4 teams to have a look at the young prospect which makes matters even more serious. Apart from the Detroit Pistons that sent 2 representatives, there have also been people from 3 other teams. First came the San Antonio Spurs via their vice-president Dennis Lindsey, then there were Adam and Jason Filippi for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trailblazers and finally there were George David and Danielle Bozielli for the Pistons. The final decision will be made in the Spring of 2011 and it will all depend on his predicted position in the Draft at that point. Worst case scenario is that will he pull out of the Draft.

More on Kostas Papanikolaou can be found here.

Barcelona announced Joe Ingles for 2 seasons

Now it's official.

Barcelona announced via their official website the signing of Australian forward Joe Ingles(2.03-SG/SF/PF). Ingles is effectively leaving CB Granada in a very difficult position as he is the best player of the team but Barcelona have paid 450,000 euros for his transfer. On the other hand Granada are close to the relegation zone in the ACB at the moment and the future doesn't look any brighter.

Ingles will be replacing the injured Gianluca Basile and his British passport makes him a valuable commodity. So far he has averaged 13.3 points 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 7 games in the ACB for Granada. He is the second Australian to join Barcelona after David Andersen(2.11-PF/C) who is now playing in the NBA.

Qyntel Woods signed with Red Wings Samara

One of the Euroleague's top performers from a season ago is taking his game to the Eurocup with the announcement Monday that the newest Russian club in the competition, Krasnye Krylia, has signed forward Qyntel Woods to a one-season contract.

Woods (203, 29) led Asseco Prokom Gdynia to the Euroleague Playoffs last season with team-high averages of 16.9 points and 6.2 rebounds. He was the second-best scorer in the competition and the sixth-ranked player overall according to performance index rating. Woods is a gifted player for his size, able to run the floor, dribble and finish like a guard despite often holding down the power forward position. His arrival to Krasnye Krylia should immediately boost the team's chances in Group H.

Woods played just four games previously in the Eurocup, during the 2008-09 season, averaging 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists for Fortitudo Bologna before moving in mid-season to join Prokom in the Euroleague. Previously, Woods had played in Portland, Miami and New York of the NBA, as well as with Olympiacos of Greece in the Euroleague. Krasnye Krylia hosts Pepsi Caserta in their Group H opener on Tuesday, which is also the first game to tip off in the 2010-11 Eurocup season. It was not clear whether Woods would arrive and be registered in time for Tuesday's game.

NBA scouts for Kostas Papanikolaou

Another name to remember in the future.

According to superbasket.gr, the Detroit Pistons sent 2 of their representatives in Athens to see themselves one of the biggest Greek prospects. George David, the Director of Player Personnel for the Pistons and also Danielle Bozielli, one of the international scouts for the Pistons came to see Greek forward Kostas Papanikolaou(2.03-SF/PF).

Papanikolaou is currently 20 years old and he has been slowly but steadily working his way to the Men's National Team of Greece after multiple medals and MVP titles with the Young National Teams. Papanikolaou can play both forward positions although he excels as a small forward. His athletic skills and knowledge of the game have drawn interest from the other side of the Atlantic and he could even be considered for the next NBA Draft. Papanikolaou started his pro career in Aris Thessaloniki but as he exploded into the Youth National Teams scene his team decided to sell him for the hefty price of 1 million euros in order to cover many of the team's debts. Now Papanikolaou is seeing some decent playing time under the guidance of Dusan Ivkovic who prefers working with youngsters and developing their game. So far he has averaged 7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 4 games in the Euroleague and also 6.5 points 6 rebounds and 1 assists in 4 games in the Greek A1 league.

Giannakis the leading candidate for Valencia

It was only a matter of time before Hussein was fired.

Panayotis Giannakis is the leading candidate for the bench of Valencia and the one that the administration wants to fill in for Manolo Hussein according to tubasket.com. The Spanish site says that pretty much every single coach who is free at the moment has been offered to Valencia. Yesterday the candidates were Zouros, Comas and Becirovic.

It seems that Manuel Comas was also considered but rejected. The second runner up would be Serbian veteran Svetislav Pesic who has won a quite a few titles in his time. Giannakis seems to be the strongest candidate and he is currently available. He has been the head coach of Olympiakos for the last 2.5 seasons. Greek media seem to have picked up on the story and the consensus there is great difficulty in his case and it all comes down to the duration of the contract. There aren't any more details as to what that means though but it is expected that Giannakis will probably decline the offer.

Panellinios to sign Samo Udrih

They replaced Rancic with a far better player.

According to the vast majority of Greek sports media, Panellinios are very close to securing Samo Udrih(1.95-PG/SG/SF). Samo Udrih is the older brother of Beno Udrih(1.91-PG/SG) of the Sacramento Kings. He will be replacing Damir Rancic(1.98-SG/SF) who returned back to Croatia. Udrih might even make his first appearance in the Greek leagu this Saturday.

Udrih played for Hopsi Polzela in the beginning of the season but then moved on to Cibona where he helped them win the Croatian League and got them to the finals of the Adriatic League. He has also played for Polzela in the beginning of his career. Other teams were Pivovarna Laško, Geoplin Slovan, Union Olimpija, Maurienne SB, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Girona, Granada and Estudiantes. He averaged 9 points 2.3 rebounds 1.8 assists in 13 games in the Adriatic League. He has played 3 games for Slovenia so far averaging 6.7 points 1.3 assists and 1.3 rebounds. PAOK blocked Deshawn Sims' move to NBDL

He didn't leave them a choice.

Deshawn Sims(2.03-SF/PF) bailed out on PAOK the other day. The American forward that had recently graduated from Michigan in 2009 but went undrafted. He did take part though in quite a few summer camps and did attract a lot of attention from Europe and PAOK decided to sign him.

However Sims decided that this wasn't the right place for him to be so he decided to pack up his stuff and disappear without telling anything to the people at PAOK. Obviously they weren't too happy about that and they had every right to do so because this was very unprofessional, but they replaced him swiftly with Robert Dozier(2.06-PF). According to basketnet.gr, today the letter of clearance of Deshawn Sims was requested by an NBDL team but PAOK decided to request compensation. They feel that they deserve compensation because of the way the team was treated and unfortunately for Sims they are holding all the cards now. It seems unlikely that the NBDL team would offer any kind of compensation so this would have to fall onto the player.

Roderick Blakney(1.85-PG) could be the new player of Malaga to replace the injured Terrell McIntyre(1.78-PG) according to basketblog.gr. Malaga's star player will be out of action for what is estimated to be about 6 weeks and so the free agent Roderick Blakney is in negotiations with the team of Malaga according to the article and it all seems to be going rather well. NBA scout for Linos Chrysikopoulos

He has been named "the next best thing" of Greek basketball and he has the potential to fulfill that.

Linos Chrysikopoulos(2.03-SF/PF) could potentially play all 5 positions in the court and he is still not 18. He will become 18 on the 1st of December and he will be called by his team to sign his first pro contract with them. Rumors say that he will be signing a 5 season contract with Aris although there is great interest by the likes of teams of Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.

But it doesn't stop there. According to athlitikanea.gr, the international scout of the Portland Blazers, Jason Fillippi, has come to Thessaloniki in order to inspect the player up close. He was unfortunate though because the player was injured lightly and had to stay out of the game against PAOK last Saturday. Filippi asked permission to see the team's practice session on Monday evening. He said : "I've been watching Linos ever since he started playing for the young National Teams of Greece. We're very much interested in his development and I wanted to see him play in a strong game but I'll ask permission to see the team's practice session on Monday. Let's hope that he will be healthy and that he will be able to take part in it."

Linos Chrysikopoulos is not very known to the public and although he has clearly NBA potential his name has stayed out of the international limelight for quite some time. He did make his presence felt last summer at
the Treviso Eurocamp being one of the youngest athletes there. Chrysikopoulos has been seeing some minutes lately as a player of Aris and at the moment he posesses mostly a defensive role in the team. That's something he can do quite well being aided by his 7'' wingspan and his knowledge of the game which puts in the right place and at the right time. In the U-16 National team he was playing point guard in offense and center in defense. Clearly he needs to improve many aspects of his game, including his shooting touch but with hard work he could be seeing a decent position in a future NBA Draft selection. On the other hand Olympiakos  and Panathinaikos will be certain to try and sign him in one way or another as part of their "cold war" of sorts. Signing players just for the sake of signing..

As time goes by he is sure to get even more playing time and even more attention from teams in Europe and the NBA. We'll be coming back to his case in the not so distant future. The 1st of December is not very far..

Gordan Giricek to return to Cibona?

Some much needed experience for Cibona.

According to jutarnji.hr, Gordan Giricek(2.01-SG/SF) could return to Cibona Zagreb, the club that he started his career in. Giricek, like many others before him might go down the sentimental route and in the twilight of his career play again for the team that made him the international star that he was in his prime.

The article said that Giricek had an unofficial conversation with coach Zdravko Radulović about joining the ranks  of Cibona to help them with his experience. The bad financial condition of Cibona forced them to create a team of youngsters with a lot of talent but not much experience between them. And this is where Giricek could help with a vast career in the Euroleague and the NBA. He was rumored to join KK Zadar earlier this summer but that never went through. Developments on this should manifest within the next few days. Cibona have a heavy schedule playing both in the Adriatic League and the Euroleague so Giricek's addition could be invaluable.

Josh Davis lands in Teramo

After the bad start in Serie A (0-4 is the record after four games), Banca Tercas Teramo signed for the season Josh Davis  (203-C/F-80, college: Wyoming).

Robert Dozier to join PAOK

Deshawn Sim's uncalled departure might proved beneficial for the Greek team.

According to basketnet.gr, PAOK are going to sign in record time Robert Dozier(2.06-PF) to fill the gap that Deshawn Sims left behind. They sourced a player in no time whereas other Greek teams are sitting twiddling their thumbs waiting for a basketball messiah.

Dozier was quite unlucky this summer because in June he broke his left foot during a workout with the Miami Heat. This injury sidelined him for 12 weeks and he missed all of the summer camp action. Last season he played for Kolossos Rhodes putting up some decent numbers averaging 9 points and 6.4 rebounds in 28 games in the Greek League helping Kolossos reach the play-offs again. He was selected in the 2009 Draft by the Miami Heat at number 60.

Bartzokas to replace Markovic in Panionios

Markovic didn't start the season very well.

Giorgos Bartzokas is going to be Nenad Markovic's replacement in Panionios according to basketblog.gr. The Bosnian head coach is going to pay for the bad results with his position as head coach. Panionios didn't start the season in the best of ways. They lost a game for the Greek Cup to Ikaros and also 2 games in the Greek league.

The owner of the team Elias Lianos had discussed in the past with Bartzokas about taking up the head coach position and it seems that this time it will actually happen. Previously Bartzokas requested a bigger budget from Lianos but lately Panionios acquired Milos Vujanic. Bartzokas resigned from Maroussi before the start of the season because of the organisational chaos that existed in Maroussi back in those days.

Deshawn Sims bailed out on PAOK

In PAOK they put a lot of faith into Deshawn Sims, but in vain..

Up to this minute, Deshawn Sims(2.03-PF) is gone from his house in Thessaloniki, Greece. The player didn't go to the practice session this morning and when the team's manager visited the house that the team rented for him he wasn't there. All of his stuff was missing. The only things that were there were his sport uniforms and his shoes.

The latest update comes from basketnet.gr, and the team's manager says that PAOK will play against Aris next weekend without Sims and it's next to impossible to find a replacement within the next 3 days. Even Sims' agent doesn't seem to know where he is. Sims played 2 games for PAOK in the Greek league averaging 13 points and 4.5 rebounds.

BC Oostende announced Tre Kelley

Last night drew Eugene "Tre" Kelley a contract until the end of the season for BC Oostende Telenet.

He replaces the injured Trevor Huffman. Kelley is expected Wednesday to Ostend and the administrative unit is doing everything to get him to play by next Saturday, although the chances are very small.

Tre Kelley spent 4 years playing college basketball at the University of South Carolina. He was raised several times by NBA teams, including the Miami Heat (2008) and Memphis Grizzlies (2010), but was never definitively an NBA team roster. Kelley played in Europe, including in 2007 for Euroleague team Cibona Zagreb and 2008/2009 for the Israeli Elitzur Ashkelon. Last season he was active in the Chinese League in DongGuan New Century Leopards where he accumulated an average of 22 points in 28 minutes playing time.

Fans push Pilafidis to resign, Kalafatakis to take over

It was only the 2nd game.

The fans of Iraklis hosted a hostile reception for the players and the technical staff of the team upon their arrival to the team's home court. Iraklis had lost to Paok in the 2nd game of the Greek League (78-59) with a 19 point margin so the fans decided to take it upon themselves and become judge and jury for a team that barely had time to do a preparation stage and has a really low budget.

Kostas Pilafidis didn't take this very lightly and he surrendered a letter of resignation the administration of the team citing personal reasons for his resignation. Information from from our friends at salonikabasket.blogspot.com suggests that there have been efforts by people within the team to urge to change his mind but that seems unlikely knowing the personality of the former head coach. This would have been Pilafidis return to Iraklis after many years but chances are it will end up in tears just after the 2nd game. According to our friends at allstarkourouna.blogspot.com, the usual suspect, Giorgos Kalafatakis is on a plane to Thessaloniki to try and rescue yet another team from relegation.
